Bush Acknowledges Low Popularity Ratings

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - Fully aware that many Europeans have disagreed with him on Iraq and other issues, President Bush (website - news - bio) was quick on Monday to acknowledge his low popularity ratings.

"You know, on this journey to Europe, I follow in some large footsteps," Bush said at the beginning of his speech that addressed hotspots around the world. "More than two centuries ago, Benjamin Franklin arrived on this continent to great acclaim."

Bush quoted an observer at the time who said, "There was scarcely a peasant or citizen who did not consider him as a friend to humankind."

"I've been hoping for a similar reception," Bush said, drawing laughter from the audience. "But Secretary (of State Condoleezza) Rice told me I should be a realist."

At least overseas they are able to criticize his policies. Most Europeans now openly despise him. I went back to Sweden last summer, to visit a bunch of relatives. We were in Stockholm to visit my aunt and her husband.

We were having dinner at their house. I asked carefully, "So......what do you think of Bush?". Hesitation. A pause. The Swedes are not known for being flamboyant. If the house was on fire, a Swede would ask to be excused before he left to put out the fire.

Clarence looked at me. His eyes narrowed. "We all despise him". "Oh they think they can fool us, just like they fooled all the Americans". I shook my head. "No, I don't think so", I said.

Suddenly, he got more edgy. "I've got business dealings with the Americans. My suppliers don't want to do business with them. It's just causing me huge problems".
