Democrats question Hicks repatriation efforts (Gitmo Aussie)

Democrats Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Senator Natasha Stott Despoja is demanding that the Federal Government reveal details of any efforts it has made to repatriate Adelaide man David Hicks to Australia.

Mr Hicks was captured during the Afghanistan war in November 2001 and was taken to the United States military camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The US Defence Department is looking to charge and try Mr Hicks in front of a US military commission.

Senator Natasha Stott Despoja says a US Government source indicated on television today that the Australian Government could have called for Mr Hicks's repatriation. <cut

"So the Democrats call on the Attorney-General to make clear, to make public to the Australian people what efforts, if any, this Government has undertaken."
