Bounties Offered on Americans, Shiites, Members of Security Services
in Iraq's 'Triangle of Death'

The Associated Press

Nov. 19, 2004 - A portly Shiite cleric, Abu Qusai sheds his black robe
for a training suit and exchanges his white turban for a baseball cap,
an effort to mask his identity for a risky trip through what has
become known as the "triangle of death."

(snip)

French journalists Christian Chesnot and Georges Malbrunot disappeared
Aug. 20 on their way from Baghdad to Najaf. They remain missing,
though their Syrian driver, Mohammed al-Joundi, was found by U.S.
troops last week in Fallujah.

Two members of a Polish television crew were killed and a third was
wounded in an attack near Mahmoudiya in May. Four months earlier, two
Iraqis working for CNN were shot and killed while traveling through
the same area.

(snip)

According to Jaber, insurgent leaders in the area offer cash bounties
for killing certain kinds of people: $1,000 for a Shiite, $2,000 for a
member of the Iraqi National Guard and $3,000 for an American.

2. $1,000 for a Shiite?!
These are clearly not secular groups. How shameful that they are fomenting communal violence. If Iraq is to survive, its people must unite.

3. speaking about the French journalists, Syrian driver at French Emb???
From all the indirect contacts that we have set up ... we infer the confirmation that the lives of Christian Chesnot and Georges Malbrunot are not in danger. The question remains when they will be freed, and we are working towards that moment," he added.

Asked whether a ransom was being sought for their release, Barnier said the matter had not arisen in negotiations so far.

Barnier confirmed that Al-Jundi, who was picked up and released by US forces after they found him during the assault on Fallujah, "made contact with French authorities."

But he refused to confirm a report by Robert Menard, head of the Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders - RSF), that the driver had taken shelter in the French embassy in Baghdad

US forces holding Fallujah correspondent: Arabic TV channel

Tue Nov 16, 7:39 PM ET
DUBAI (AFP) - US forces in the flashpoint Iraqi town of Fallujah are holding a correspondent for the Arabic television station Al-Arabiya, the Dubai-based channel said.

Fallujah resident Abdel Kader Al-Saadi was picked up on Thursday in the battle-torn city where US troops have been battling Iraqi insurgents, the station said in a statement late Tuesday.

The US army command had informed the mainly Saudi-financed channel that the correspondent "has been arrested with a large number of residents" and would be freed "as soon as possible".

"Al-Arabiya deplores the detention, for the fifth day running, of its correspondent," and "calls on all human rights organisation. to guarantee his safety," the TV station said in its statement.

7. If Iraqi's with guns
were running around all over my community shooting everything that moves Id expect some action to be taken. Though I dont know that placing bounties on non-combatants is the answer. Id hope that local law enforcment would do its job and help resolve the problem in a legal manner.

8. this reportage is garbage
and is an example of a growing pile of shit. they have no reporters so they make stuff up. whole cloth.

"a portly shiite cleric", do you have difficulty visualing him?
How about in disguise with a baseball cap. Mostaqa in disguise in a baseball cap. This is hilarious stuff.
And poor Al-Joundi? he "was found" by the americans. where? why in Falluje, of course. without the invasion, the poor soul would still be lost.
jeez.
