I've HAD IT and I must rant.
Since the moment I woke up this morning, every time I flipped the channel to MSNBC there was "BREAKING NEWS" about that Karr guy.
Hours and hours after the plane took off it was STILL breaking news that he was on a flight. WHAT THE HELL? MSNBC has just stepped over the line into Faux territory with me. (Speaking of- Faux & CNN both were NOT doing hours and hours of breaking news on Karr- I checked) They do that breaking news shit all the time- and the story can be hours and hours old. After the first or second time you say it IT IS NOT BREAKING NEWS. It may be DEVELOPING or ONGOING but it is NOT breaking.
Add to that the fact that I am flipping offended about what they decree is breaking news......

Examples of BREAKING NEWS that is really NOT:

1. BREAKING NEWS: Mel Gibson issues apology

2. BREAKING NEWS: Condi Rice arrives at Bush Ranch

3. BREAKING NEWS: Karrs father says they haven't spoken in years

But just for the record folks~

It's not BREAKING NEWS when a soldier dies in this BS war!

It's not BREAKING NEWS when the President lies again and again!

It's not BREAKING NEWS when another family loses their home because of Bush policies!

and it most CERTAINLY is NOT BREAKING NEWS when a non white child is abducted, raped or murdered.

I'm also increasingly frustrated because they did a BREAKING NEWS report that he had champagne... prawns... chardonay...beer... And you know what? That's BULLSHIT. Whether he did it or not, he confessed to killing her. The bastard is obviously evil- why is he getting red carpet treatment? What really frustrates me is that the government wastes money on this shit and the media waste time reporting it. Karr gets a gourmet feast while our soldiers suffer in a war we shouldn't be in. Apparently our government is more interested in feeding child molesters than in... oh, I don't know- SAVING THE FUCKING VICTIMS OF KATRINA. And the media is more interested in reporting things that PISS YOU OFF... instead of keeping you informed about THE WORLD.

It's like being through the looking glass. It's SICK sick sick that people are more interested and invested in this story than in what is happening to our country- and the rest of the world. This story should absolutely not be BREAKING NEWS 24/7.
I sure as hell didn't see this as breaking news today:

Gunmen have opened fire on Shia Muslim pilgrims in Baghdad, killing at least 20 and injuring 300, officials say.

Move on... nothing to see here. Look over there!! It's Jonbenet's gardner!

5. Kill your TV
You'll be glad you did...
Stories are meant to infuriate...its one of the emotional 'hooks'.
Why expect truth from proven liars ? Sociopaths don't change.
It's all designed for your viewing displeasure.

Jerry Mander wrote a good book about 4 reasons to get rid of your TV,
I think it might open your eyes.

In the end, one of our main powers is choice.

The only time I wished I had it was on Sept 11th 2001, but then I went to the blood donation center (with all of Austin) that day an saw more than I ever would have wanted to. I'm grateful not to have the infernal thing in my life. I get all the news I need from DU and Buzzflash, with a healthy smattering of whatever I want.

10. Funny how this became the new "Natalie Holloway"
right after Judge Taylor's decision on the NSA wiretapping and her conclusion that * is a criminal. :sarcasm: It's become the usual pattern. The other day I heard Thom Hartmann say that he has his suspicions that the regime called in markers with the Thai government to get them to extradict this guy and similarly, they got the British to prematurely arrest the supposed group of terrorist hijackers (before their investigation was complete) right around the time of the Lamont win. Couldn't possibly be to distract the sheeple now could it?

56. The week of the "confession" there was a story about teen pregnancy in
Canton, OH. It seems 65 of 1300 girls in the high school there are pregnant after abstinence only sex education. Now the school board is going to allow contraception to be discussed even though they will still emphasize abstinence. Small potatoes for the girls (and boys!) and their families, whose lives have been changed forever.

Don't understand why there wasn't more coverage - I'm sure a good number of those pregnant girls are blond and white, but go figure.

28. Probably! So please don't tell me -- what little I can afford to send
to D.U. every month provides more entertainment than TV possibly could, I think -- The only place I see TV is at the laundromat, and I'm always horrified at the garbage some folks sit there watching.

The blown-dry lip-glossed "news" seems especially inadequate after years of listening to BBC after 11 p.m.

19. Oh Yeah, well take a look at the LBN Forum!!!
First the RULES! You have to look at these to even post in this forum, but a lot of Boneheads ignore these easily understood (by most people anyways) instructions:

Please be aware of the following restrictions when posting in Latest Breaking News:

1. Do not post opinion pieces, editorials, or other stories that are not news.

2. Do not post news that is more than 12 hours old.

3. Do not post duplicate topics about news events that have already been posted. Please note that we are very strict about duplicates in the Latest Breaking News forum. Multiple discussion threads about the same topic are not permitted. If you would like to share a new article about a news item that is already being discussed, please add it to the thread that is already open on that topic.

snip>
8. Do not post frivolous or off-topic news stories. The moderators of the Latest Breaking News forum have the authority to act as news editors, and may remove news stories that they do not consider appropriate for this forum.

9. All of our other rules for posting apply as well, including copyright rules.

Easy, huh? Now some examples of todays postings in LBN:

McCain Mines Bush Faithful for 2008 Team

Lieberman says Rumsfeld Should Quit

Nebraska to have a 2008 FEB caucus? (no link) state convention new

Anti-abortion activists eye inner cities

The ocean is slowly claiming Malasiga. They say it's global warming.

Ok, I feel better, I guess rules are meant to be broken. The media is not alone in it's inability to separate breaking news from the mundane or the mere somewhat interesting or the earth shattering from the routine. Don't be so hard on them. It must be very difficult after all, we have people who are unable to successfully differentiate braking news when provided with a clear nine point detailed list. As the Chief Executive himself will tell you, it's hard work!

23. .........that's en-ter-tainment!
That's Entertainment
Tony Bennett
(Howard Deitz/Arthur Schwartz)

The clown with his pants falling down or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean.
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights or the bride with a guy on the side,
Or the ball where she gives him her all.
That's entertainment!

The plot can be hot, simply teeming with sex,
a gay divorcee who is after her "ex".
It can be Oedipus Rex, where a chap kills his father
and causes a lot of bother.
The clerk who is thrown out of work by the boss,
Who is thrown for a loss by the skirt who is doing him dirt.
The world is a stage, the stage is a world of entertainment.

52. I turned on MSNBC
this morning, to watch Imus (can't stand the man, but CNN was making me crazy). He was interviewing some guy, last name Rich (Frank Rich, perhaps-I don't remember, it was early). And Imus asked the guy if government officials purposely leak BS "news" to keep our minds off of the really bad shit happening, and Rich admitted that many times this DOES happen. He gave the example of Ashcroft holding a press conference in 2002 to announce "we'd" caught Jose Padilla (dirty bomb guy, or so they say); Asshat was on an official trip to Moscow and interrupted his "busy" schedule to announce this. But the point that nobody seemed to realize at the time was the Padilla had be caught weeks and weeks ago.

Fuckers. I have TV so I can watch the Simpsons and Family Guy. The news in this country is for the birds.

I've HAD IT with the John Karr stories, too.

OK- they may have solved a 10 year old murder case
wonderful, MOVE ON!!!!!!

Let's face it, MSM's priorities have been screwed up
for years!

When Monica Lewinsky's involvement with Bill Clinton
preempts the Pope's first visit to Cuba, EVER since
Fidel came into power, something is very FU*KED UP !

The rest of the world was laughing at us! "Your president
had an affair ?- BFD! Our's has a couple on the side!"
This is NOT Major World NEWS!!!!

My blood pressure is rising ,fast.
Hey-thanks for posting this.

55. You'll have that story until there isn't a shred of gossip
they can squeeze out of it because doofus Abrams is the programmer. Get rid of that daffy duck sounding loser of a manager and

maybe there will be a chance to get a little Iraq news. He wets himself talking about that Ramsey stuff. Little strange. You'd think

he was in the house.

60. Perspective from Democracy Now!
TV Networks Focus on JonBenet Ramsey Case Over NSA Ruling

The major court ruling on the National Security Agency surveillance program has received scant coverage from the nation’s three major networks. On Thursday, ABC, CBS and NBC all led their nightly broadcasts with the latest in the 1996 murder case of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey. ABC devoted twice as much time in its broadcast to Ramsey as it did to the NSA story. CBS offered seven times as much airtime to Ramsey as it did to the NSA story. And NBC devoted 15 times more airtime to Ramsey.
