Sen. Boxer issues "thank-you" to Voinovich
http://boxer.senate.gov/news/record.cfm?id=236587
NEWSROOM Press Releases/Statements

Statement By Senator Barbara Boxer
Member Of The Senate Foreign Relations Committee

April 19, 2005

I want to thank Senator George Voinovich of Ohio for his courage and independence regarding the Bolton nomination. Senator Voinovich broke with his otherwise united party and said the truth – that this nomination is very troubling.

My own hope is that the President decides to nominate someone else for this important position of U.N. Ambassador. But if he does not, I am going to continue to do my job to get the whole truth out about Mr Bolton’s record.

Intimidating intelligence officials is not only morally wrong, but puts our country in great danger. Surely there must be many other men and women who could fulfill this post with honor.

2. yeah, I did that this morning
also wrote to Kerry, Dodd, Biden and Voinovich. Still have a couple more to send.

I sent a "corrective action" email to Senator Coleman, who, unfortuantely, is my senator and is also on the F-R committee. I politely told him I was disappointed that he was in favor of rushing through the nomination of Bolton and asked him to reconsider his support.

3. Barbara Boxer is just straight up classy!
That is a class act of sincere appreciation! I am genuinely grateful she is my Senator!

Voinovich did a great act of conscience yesterday and deserves support for saying and doing it publicly.

6. She has so much class
Yesterday was a watershed day for the party, I think. Kerry, Boxer, Biden, Dodd, Obama -- all kicked ass and got results. I hope we start seeing more of this. And I commend Voinovich for his courage in siding with the Dems. Let's see what happens when this actually gets to the floor of the Senate.

THREAD, it is not to be missed as an example of what they really are. I hope this behavior opens some eyes that have been wide shut until now:

9. I am not surprised
Ann Coulter is advocating that women should not be allowed to vote because they tend to vote democratic, their exclusion will guarantee republican victories.

10. More evidence that AC is NOT A WOMAN..actually I have my doubts it's even
HUMAN:

Actually, there are some very interesting points made in the thread on the neocon attacks on Voinovich, like who their backer is. Their statements are so over-the-top, I am hoping they will raise some eyebrows far enough to crack open some eyes.

But the scary thing is the willingness to disenfranchise people left and right, just to guarantee winning, how is that any different
than a banana republic?

12. Banana republics don't usually invade foreign countries
And they usually don't work as hard to project the APPEARANCE of democracy while destroying it. Their hypocrisy factor isn't quite so stratospheric.

Another point about Banana republics is that they are often supported and maintained by the military. When I hear about the neocon influence at work at military academies, it makes me very, very nervous:

15. read what Teddy Roosevelt says about criticizing the prez
I posted this elsewhere but I think it applies here.

Read what Teddy says about the Presidency:

"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right.

Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

She'll probably enjoy being reminded of it. I'm certainly adding it to my list of favorites. Thank you!

Edited on Wed Apr-20-05 09:46 PM by MissWaverly
we need to get back to a leadership role in the World, I wrote at Sen. Boxer's urging a note to GWB about rescinding the nomination of Bolton, we need someone to extend the hand of friendship rather than the clenched fist of the bully in the U.N.

Condi Rice - both are in this thread, one in the OP and one in a reply:

20. She's great
I read somewhere that President Bush nominated Bolton as
a gesture of contempt, I like Barbara Boxer:
"Surely there must be many other men and women who could fulfill this post with honor."
How can we act like the bully in the school yard when we owe everybody, even the bully doesn't pick a fight with the kid loaning him his lunch money.

17. You MUST READ Sen. Boxer's two April 20 letters in this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=1735671#1735694
Thread title: "Barbara Boxer to * : Nominate a new UN Ambassador!"

The first, in the OP, is to B* himself and asks him to nominate another candidate instead of Bolton. I'll bet that turned his mottled face red!

The second, in one of the replies to the OP in this thread here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=1735671&mesg_id=1735811
(I'm sure it's been reported in other DU threads too), is the one to Condi Rice, coolly pointing out that any attempt by her (as have been reported by the WashPost) is frigging UNCONSTITUTIONAL. It's lovely, cool and professional. And dead serious.
