My California politicis buddy was in Boston with his boss on business.

I took them out to dinner (though his boss did make a half hearted feint toward the check after my hand was already on it.)

While my Buddy is Obama all the way, turned out his boss is a socially liberal, fiscally conservative libertarian. (Waaah, I don't want to pay taxes.)

I stayed far away from political conversation. (If I got my buddy in trouble with his boss in any way, I'd never forgive myself.) However, at some point, someone mentioned bulletproof vests. I chipped in that I had priced a bulletproof vests online and, while there was a range of prices, bulletproof vests in general seem to be much less expensive than I would have guessed. And I just may get myself one.

However, I did make an airhead mistake. I meant to say that I was obsessed with dinnerware--probably a mistake in itself. However, instead of obsession, I said fetish, which is downright creepy. I did not realize until days later.



Talked to my buddy last week and told him how totally humiliated I was by my mistake. Turns out, his boss thought I was great because of--wait for it--my interest in a bulletproof vest!!1111!!! My buddy said he probably never noticed the fetish remark. (Think my buddy is wrong about that because the boss asked "What kind of dinnerware?")

I don't get it. Does anyone understand this? Is a bulletproof vest a Libertarian thing?
