It's the Democratic Party that jumped the shark. Liberals have stood and watched as the line has been moved to the right little by little year by year till there really is no more party for liberals. You have Democrats who stand for the centrists and Republicans who stand for right wing lunacy. Anyone on the actual left, social liberals, anti-war folks, they have no or very little representation anymore.
The party gets angry when these people won't throw away their values to stand "with the Democrats", and the people who support the party, in whatever form it's in, jump on and help the Democrats marginalize the issues liberals have with the party, and people can't figure out why many liberals have turned away... :shrug:
