15. Yes, I recall that
the "Loyalty Oath". It really made me very angry and I remember the event as a tipping point for me as an activist. In 1964, I was a high school senior when they brought us into the cafeteria to listen to some speakers talk about evil anarchists and subversives who wanted to over throw the govt and make us Communists.

They told us we had to fill out a questionnaire and sign a pledge that basically said we agreed not to overthrow the federal govt and be good little automatons or we would not graduate. I don't remember the specifics of the quiz... but I thought it was wrong the way it was worded, and it painted anti-war protesters -- activities which many of us were already engaged in -- as traitors. I think the "Loyalty Oath", more than the questionnaire, was what they wanted.

Someone yelled out, "this is bullshit!". He stood up, back to the speaker's table and raised his fist in defiance. One after another, the majority of the senior class rose up in solidarity and flung the balled up papers back at the PTB. We all started chanting, "we won't sign!" They threaten us with expulsion, but by then word spread and other students joined the protest. The PTB relented and I don't remember that anything more came of it.

Search for "Loyalty Oath" and you'll find the information you're looking for.
