48. But it does say that Todd was "very much in the picture"
According to online sources, Sarah and Todd met in high school and had been "courting" ever since. So that's not exactly the same as being unattached.

I guess she just couldn't keep her hands off the basketball players.

Todd and Sarah Palin are a classic small-town couple. They met at Wasilla High School shortly after he moved here. As the story goes, the then-Sarah Heath was smitten with the basketball star, as he was with her.

After graduation, Sarah went off to college in Hawaii and Idaho, while Todd stayed in Alaska. Sarah graduated in 1987 with a degree in communications from the University of Idaho, and a year later the couple eloped. They were married in City Hall to save on a costly wedding.

Palin's dad talks about how his daughter met her husband in the most recent podcast he recorded for the website for "Sarah Palin's Alaska," SPAlaska.com. . . . Todd Palin came from Glennallen, Alaska, and was, according to Heath, "quite a basketball player."

"I was coaching at Wasilla High School — I wasn't coaching Todd but I was coaching all the running and some of the girls — and I saw him in the gym shooting around," Heath said.

Heath approached Todd, and the two took to the court to play a game of H-O-R-S-E. They immediately hit it off, inspiring Heath to come home and tell his daughter, "Hey, there's a real stud that just moved in from Glennallen."

Sarah met Todd a few days later and, according to Heath, "it was an instantaneous attraction" for both. While the spark was there, Heath points out that the two "courted" for about seven or eight years, and that it was the summers they spent commercial fishing in Wasilla that really brought them together. "That's where their relationship really bonded, on the commercial fishing boat," Heath said.
