Yes, parents have raised their children's children as their own.

Most of them, though, will tell their friends "this is my daughter Betty's son. He was fathered by a no-good idiot we had thrown in jail. We shipped Betty off to State University so she could get a good job and give this child the upbringing he deserves. We're hoping she meets a nice young man and marries him so our grandson will have the father figure in his life he so desperately needs."

Or something like that.

They do NOT, OTOH, tell their friends, "this is my child." Which is what the Palins are doing.
