"Short term politics" is largely how desired goals are realized, step by step (or inch by grudged inch). FDR was a master of that frequently maligned art, but he never took his eyes off the prize. His mammoth victories in 1932, 1934, and 1936, gave him great political capital, but much of his New Deal was accomplished in that manner. Bear that in mind before bum-rapping Obama, who has FAR less political capital.

This is NOT a slam against Bernie (or Dennis either). FAR from it! But it's a recognition that progress sometimes require "baby steps".
