He's rejecting his jerk of a so-called "father".
My sons have stopped using their dad's part of their hyphenated name for all but legal purposes. (Though I admit the younger one did because the older one did.) I know when the older one turns 18, he's changing it legally.
Their dad completely understands that it was HIS BEHAVIOUR and HIS SCREW-UPS that caused this. He's never once berated them - or me - for it. It's all his fault.
