Dan Quayle defends son before vote

Former Vice President Dan Quayle didn't want to leave the supportive e-mail off the end of his son's campaign for Congress.

In a Monday night e-mail pitch to Ben Quayle's supporters, Dan made a last-ditch effort to defend 33-year-old Ben against allegations that he wrote for the sex-themed website Dirty Scottsdale — which has since morphed into TheDirty.com — and to help him win a 10-way primary election for the Republican nomination to replace retiring Rep. John Shadegg in Arizona's 3rd District.

Though Dan Quayle appeared with his son in an early campaign ad and has tapped his extensive fundraising network to help his son, the e-mail is the first time the former vice president has publicly inserted himself into Ben's campaign.

"With the recent turn of events, I cannot, in good conscience, remain silent," Dan wrote, the e-mail going out less than 24 hours before voters head to the polls in the Tuesday primary.
