If we played a waiting game and Obama & democrats kept telling the GOP that a specific tax package or nothing was all they would accept then the GOP would be forced to cave.

That would probably require waiting past the lameduck, but with Reid still running the senate he could refuse to vote on any tax cuts for the rich the house passes, or democrats could filibuster it in the same of fiscal responsibility to score PR points and show the Tea Partiers are big fat hypocrites on the deficit.
