Then Colonel "Chesty" Puller, USMC, in a radio message on Guadalcanal in 1942. The occasion became known as the Battle of Bloody Ridge, which the Marines held against repeated Japanese attacks. The Japanese lost so many troops, it eventually cost them the island, later their huge base at Rabaul and eventually the war.
Puller later became the Commandant of the USMC.
