Energy project first of its kind in the state

Representatives of state government, along with local school district officials and more than a dozen members of the public attended a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for a biomass plant that will heat the middle and high schools in the Winnisquam Regional School District.

Before introducing Friday's guest speakers, Cheryl Somma, business administrator for the school district, reminded everyone of how the project began, which was through a 2008 energy audit of by Honeywell, the thermostat and heating systems company based in Morris Township, N.J.

The project, which also includes the building of a classroom, also will serve as the foundation for a green energy curriculum in the district which will feature prominently in the high school's vocational-agricultural program.

The project has been funded through a Qualified School Construction Bond award from the state Department of Education of $3.55 million, which came from federal economic stimulus money.
