Locusts are defying predictions they would be killed off by cold weather, with reports still persisting of large swarms in Victoria's Wimmera-Mallee.

Moroccan locusts cause biggest damage in last life development stage: deputy mayor

Last year saw the most serious problem with the invasion of Moroccan locusts. The insects have several stage of life development. They were in their last stage of development and there was no meaning taking any measures, because they were to die, but in that stage they cause the biggest damage, Sevdalin Ognyanov, deputy mayor of the southern municipality of Momchilgrad, told FOCUS News Agency.

He says this year the most affected regions in the municipality are the villages of Postnik, Devintsi, Nanovitsa, Gruevo and Lale. He specified that last year the swarm of Moroccan locusts was very large, but the necessary measures were not taken and now the invasion continues.

Locust-stricken areas in southern Bulgaria sprayed as planned: minister

The Moroccan locust-stricken areas in southern district of Kardzhali are being sprayed since Sunday morning, Minister of Agriculture and Food Miroslav Naydenov told FOCUS News Agency. He says the weather conditions grounded the agricultural helicopter for a short time, but the areas are being sprayed as planned. He expressed hope the measures will produce results and the agricultural produce will be saved.
