2. I doubt we'll ever get there.
For starters, very few Americans even understand diversity. For 99% of Americans, diversity means "more African-Americans." They could care less if Asian-Americans, Native Americans, gays, women, Muslims are underrepresented. Not sure why is is true, but it is.

What is it about race in particular? We obsess about Congress and the Supreme Court "representing" the people (read: look like them), but we could care less that single moms, people with AIDS, etc. aren't represented. It seems that if I want someone to care about the issues I care about, the fact that they have AIDS like me, or are a single mother like me, would matter to me much more than that they have the same skin tone as me. Unfortunately for most Americans, they could care less; it's all about race.
