Does it make since that he hit her first and THEN she decided it was safe and wise to get close enough to kiss him and then bite him?

Common sense says it happened the other way around - in which it case it was simple self defense on his part and in fact he could sue HER for assault. Indeed his tongue is a very important part of his livelihood as a TV pitchman and she might have damaged his ability to make a living.
