My impression of this event was that this was an attempt by the US (this incident where nuclear weapons were sent from Minot occurred about a week before Israel bombed Syria's nuclear reactor in early september 2007) to have a joint bombing with Israel where they would hit Syria's nuclear facilities and the US would hit Iran's nuclear facilities. Or maybe we were going to give the weapons to Israel and let them strike both Iran and Syria. I don't know. Supposedly after the intel agencies and air force figured out what was going on they mutinied and stopped the program. So after that there was a plane with nuclear weapons just sitting at Barksdale. Hence the whole cover story (whoops, we accidentally transferred nuclear weapons cross country. Silly us) and the fact that everyone associated with it is ending up dead.
