Judiciary Panel Wants to Interview Six About Claim of Forged Iraq Letter

The House Judiciary Committee cast a dragnet Wednesday in its investigation of claims that the Bush administration forged a document to buttress the case for invading Iraq.

Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. , D-Mich., sent letters to six current and former senior government officials, asking them to schedule a time to tell the committee what they know about the affair.

The review stems from charges made in the recently published book “The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism,” by Ron Suskind.

In the book, Suskind says the White House commissioned a CIA forgery of a letter from Saddam Hussein’s former intelligence chief to Saddam that appeared to establish an Iraqi connection to Sept. 11 hijacker Mohammed Atta.

Conyers wrote former CIA Director George J. Tenet; former vice presidential chief of staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby; John Hannah, assistant to the vice president for national security affairs; and former CIA official A.B. “Buzzy” Krongard. Conyers also wrote two former CIA officials, John Maguire and Robert Richer, whom Suskind has cited as his sources.
