2. "American voters oppose same-sex marriage 55 – 36 percent"
I just don't get it. Some friends of mine, liberal breeders like me, who are very supportive of gay rights, but get hung up on the concept of marriage.
So one day I said to a couple of them: "You support equal protection from discrimination for gay and lesbian couples, you support their right to adopt, you support equal benefits, you support all the rights for same-sex couples that opposite sex-couples receive."
Their response: "Of course."
So then I replied, "Well, you support same-sex marriage."
And both of them went into a diatribe about how marriage was different, and what they supported was the rights of marriage but not marriage itself.
Huh?
It's like there's some deep psychosis about the word "marriage." Perhaps it's the years of dogma, the fairytale of the bride in her long gown and groom in his tux. Whatever it is, it prevents normally rational people from giving a rational reaction.

But I suppose at some point in history, people reacted the same way in the Netherlands and Canada. And perhaps once the normalcy of same-sex marriage in Mass. and California sinks in, the same will happen here.
The further marginalization of the wacko Fundie right doesn't hurt, either.
