11. Portugal is one of the PIIGS
so be careful of how you invest and even how much money you exchange for Euros in the very short term. We should know the worst by the beginning of next year.

Portugal is also the country that sparked the beginning of Amnesty International when a student received a jail sentence for shouting 'Freedom!' in a bar.

Just be aware that their laws and protections are not the same as ours, although I haven't heard of any real human rights outrages for many years there.

My friends who have lived there for any length of time adore the country and its people. Just be on your toes about the financial situation and you should be a very happy Portuguese clam.
