29. Here's the part people forget all about at their peril.
Social Security is more than retirement. In 1995, I was on top of the world. At 47, my youngest was graduated from high school; I had a great job; making great money; traveling; and at long last, the single parent struggle was fading fast. Then I was disabled by an auto accident. I could no longer work. As a paycheck to paycheck single parent, I had no savings. Simply...without SSI disability, I would be who knows where?

It is extremely difficult to imagine your entire world turned upside down; everything you have worked for essentially erased because there is a new obstacle taking priority over everything else. I was extremely lucky because I was working and had great health insurance at the time. It even covered my physical therapy for over a year.

With no social security, what happens to those persons suddenly disabled? How are their needs met? Where do they live when their income suddenly vanishes? I do not consider my situation unique. I cannot begin to imagine that safety net removed or reduced to a token gesture.
