There was a classic scene in Life of Brian where one of the Jewish rebels goes on an anti-Roman rant. "What have the Romans ever done for us?"
After the other rebels tick off a few things the Romans have done, he rephrases the question. "Apart from the the aqueducts, the roads, sanitation, wine, education, medicine, and public order, what have the Romans ever done for us?"
The attacks on the government are a thinly veiled attempt to game a system, that has already been rigged to the advantage of those born with advantages. Corporations, more specifically the leaders of them who profit the most personally, have us by the short and curlies. With that not being enough, they are going for the balls, by turning a good portion of the voting populace into anti-government nuts.
Growing up, I never thought of America and the government as two different things. Sure the government was full of racists and war mongers, but so was the country. Changes for the better came from within the government. At age 15 when Reagan was elected, I could see through the shallow lie. When he spoke to Americans, I had to substitute "corporation" for "you" to have his speeches make sense. Even when he was the government, taking food off my mother's table and my Pell grant and giving to rich people, I didn't oppose the concept of government, I opposed his line of bullshit.
