49. Let's make a careful distinction. Gay-baiting perpetuates ugly prejudice and
a culture of intolerance: by accepting it, we help keep life miserable for lots of innocent people. The issue here is not whether I think the Senator has often been wrongedheaded or sanctimonious (which I do), nor is it whether I'm happy to see the rightwingers rapidly attacking their own (which I am). The issue is that -- like its cousins redbaiting and jewbaiting and blackbaiting -- gaybaiting is a nasty activity, that we ought not accept
