(Democrats need to do something similar in reverse.)

Palin is now perfectly positioned to rile up the base, which in any case drives midterm elections.

After the GOP takes over Capitol Hill in 2010 Palin has tons of time till the 2012 election to move back to the center to win the presidency and all the fanatics will still remember that she's one of them even while she doesn't talk about it so much in 2012. So by starting now, in 2012 she gets the best of both ends of the GOP political spectrum - rightists and (relative) moderates.

All this includes fundamentalists, who power her juggernaut now - and will still be loyal even when she stops acting so extreme in 2012.
