But he did have the ability to speak in very simple terms to the fears of extraordinary numbers of Americans. He went into politics at a fearful and divided time, not unlike this one. He was extremely successful at consoling and fortifying Nixon's "Silent Majority" in a way Nixon himself couldn't do. I never bought into it. I couldn't stand Ronald Reagan then or now. But I saw it happen. I'd say he was just smart enough to let other people's brains do the heavy lifting while he tended to the stagecraft.
