Wow, that is so revealing--what you said about the parallels with Communist VietNam.

I remember reading 1984 as a kid and thinking that the U.S. had exactly the same potential with a capitalistic bend--ads, mostly. And now, decades later, here we are.

As for me personally, a former advertising exec and copywriter, I mute all TV ads. That's if I have the TV on, which is rare. And anymore when I go out in public, I wear headphones to shut out the noise. People think I'm listening to music but it's really to shut out all the stuff like you describe above. Since I adopted this practice, I notice that my life seems so much more peaceful.
