The White House needed compliant US Attorneys in states where there are tight races coming up. This is part of the same pattern of stealing elections by any way possible - fix the machines, stage "riots" to stop vote recounts, start bogus investigations against Democrats, and fail to investigate illegal behavior by Republicans.
