Not that status symbols like nice cars won't work...they many times do. They are just super expensive and attract the wrong kind of person.
Lol...my best advice to people is always "learn to play an instrument, learn to do some art, or learn some magic". It's stupid and amazing how a simple card trick can get you a shit load of attention, especially at the bar.
