More to the point, we did not fare well as a nation under the manipulations of the former Republican Speaker and his pal Tom DeLay.

We have done quite a bit better under Nancy Pelosi and are likely to continue to do well under Nancy Pelosi, who by the way, has navigated anti-Iraq War legislation through to narrow victory in the chamber.

The key word there is "narrow." A lot of representatives opposed the measures but work can be done on behalf of their political opponents to increase the majority the Speaker has to work with.

By way of contrast, I count exactly zero anti-Bush initiatives steered through committee and floor by Mr. Hastert.
