.... Vitter was trapped, and he knew it -- or heard it: the reporters with boom mikes and in high heels chasing after him. So he stopped.

"I look forward today to being back at work, really focused on a lot of important issues for the people of Louisiana," Vitter said, one week after acknowledging that his phone number appeared in the telephone records of the alleged "D.C. Madam," Deborah Jeane Palfrey. "I'm glad to be here."

With that, he took off again. ......

He reportedly apologized to his Republican colleagues during their weekly luncheon. Invoking a rare code of speechlessness, most senators declined to answer questions afterward, especially the one about whether Vitter had broken the law by acknowledging interactions with a company that federal prosecutors have called a prostitution ring.

.....

"I think this should have a full airing," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) said after a prolonged pause. "I don't really understand everything he did. There are a lot of accusations about prostitutes here in Washington, prostitutes in Louisiana. I don't know if that's breaking the law or not. It's obvious that it all came about as someone who's being charged with a crime here in Washington, D.C.

"But I'm not going to get into this issue."
