I have been to both Israel and the Arab world. In Israel, in the early 70’s, the Arabs we met (who knew of our Jewish heritage) universally referred to Jews as “brothers,” (with fingers intertwined). One of the people we became friends with who we called Dr. Ez told me to look at the map on the doors of the Knesset - which shows greater Israel from the Tiger to the Euphrates. “This is what Israel wants.” I disagreed. Now at 68, I know he was right. Israel will not give anything back. They are prepared to live with the “unpeace” - it is the “cost of doing business.”
I think Obama is taking a bold stroke to force the parties to finally make public their positions. Their answer will fundamentally change the dynamics of Palestine and Israel’s relationship.
