African American people had a separate waiting room and were helped after the Whites regardless of who needed help first.

Of course, there were also situations where black people were denied treatment at "white" facilities. One of the most horrible instances of this is the African-American Dr. who discovered using plasma for blood transfusions that saved many soldiers' lives in WWII (his name escapes me right now)...he was in a car accident and was refused service by a "white" hospital and died from blood loss. He would have probably survived if he had received a blood transfusion.

Dr. Charles Drew. Here is a link to some info about him...note the change at the bottom because the original writer left off the fact that he was refused service at an "all white" hospital.
