having to do with the election - and that therefor they and Hastert are victims.
The reason this has a backfire effect - is that in essence it says that the story shouldn't have been released at all - which means Foley would still be sitting in office preying on pages.
A second reason it has a backfire effect - is that it makes no sense. Already in the media it is out there that the story was given to the press by a GOP staffer.
The third reason it has a backfire effect - is that it just makes them sound like they are desperate by "playing the victim".
