If not the 60's, then just plain ol' psychotic revenge fantasies. Early in life, they got beat up or made fun of by someone they misidentified as liberal and have based their entire lives on "getting back" at that person.
Or they resented how all the hippies seemed to have all the fun while they were too chickenshit to open their minds...and they went home and sharpened their axes.
