SARASOTA -- The Republican Party is leading the country well despite complaints from some top Republicans that GOP leaders in Washington have lost their direction, said Ken Mehlman, the chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Over the last two months, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey and former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, both Republicans, have come to Sarasota and questioned the direction of the party because of increasing federal budgets.

Armey said it's as if the country needs a new Republican revolution.

But Mehlman, after a speech in Sarasota on Sunday night, said the party is leading the nation well.

He said the party needs such criticism every now and then to make sure it is updating the GOP's mission regularly.

"The party is going in the right direction," Mehlman said.

Mehlman warned the party faithful not to grow complacent and let Democrats regain control of politics in Washington, D.C. Mehlman said that would mean higher taxes, more government and more activist judges being appointed to the federal courts.

"It would be disastrous for national security if we allowed the terrorists to prevail and we withdrew like we did in Vietnam," Mehlman said.

He warned that Democrats don't have a commitment to winning the war,....

Mehlman said Harris, who was at Sunday's dinner, has an incredible record in Congress and would make a good senator.
