19. That's a good question and I imagine the answer is complex.
But my guess is that if you convince a group of people that they are "chosen" and that everyone else is not, then you can justify anything you do in public life by appealing to this core belief. You can destroy school systems and call it "No Child Left Behind" and so on. These titles are Orwellian to us but to the true believers they are more evidence that they are chosen, they are right and that's as far as they have to think about it.

Deep down, most people are moral, do know right from wrong. And perhaps that's where the Rapture comes in. The terrible guilt gets diffused by a painless Apocalypse.

Pretty neat trick, painless Apocalypse. :eyes:
