Another great argument for slavery is that slaves became too valuable to use in dangerous or unhealthy jobs... so they hired Irish, and later Chinese, workers. They were a lot cheaper.

This lesson was not lost on Capitalists. They learned slavery was not economically sound. Why feed and house your slaves if you can work them half to death and pay them just enough to stay alive, but never dig their way out of wage-slavery?
