Instead I follow my mother's spiritual beliefs by attending ceremonies (some annual) overseen and conducted by my tribal elders in Oklahoma, Wyoming and Kansas. I did know someone (a classmate) who quit the Catholic Church and became a Baptist. She said she left primarily because confessions were no longer private (no confessional box available). She's a RWinger. When I was growing up I there were a number of Catholic families in the neighborhood but they were of the hip, liberal variety. For a long time I thought all Catholics were hip and liberal.

But, as to your question, differences in practices between churches within a particular faith doesn't surprise me.
