WEVD was a radio station created in the memory of Eugene Victor Debs, a socialist-activist who ran for president. By 2000 it was an independent station with several progressive radio talk shows. It was sold by The Jewish Forward, which had been its guardian for decades, in 2000 to the ABC Corporation, which promptly changed WEVD's format to ESPN Sports radio in NYC. The ratings for the new format are and have been abysmal. The hosts have found work at other stations, but Disney/ABC had a bonus of disenfranchising a liberal/progressive/non-neocon audience by its choice.
