WTOP Radio has learned Capitol Police Chief Terrance Gainer may soon step down.

Gainer is under pressure because of the hiring of his son-in-law as a Capitol Hill police officer.

While the son-in-law was apparently properly trained and hired, questions have raised about whether this was legal under federal guidelines.

There's been criticism on Capitol Hill, from staffers and some members, about Gainer's decision to brief reporters directly, rather than consulting lawmakers about who does the briefing.
