KENNEDY WANTS ANSWERS Top intelligence officials questioned about Iraq war

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Edward Kennedy asked the nation's top intelligence officials yesterday if the United States is "winning" the war in Iraq.

"Those are the words of the president: 'We are winning,'" Kennedy said, repeating a line from President Bush's State of the Union address last month.

"Did you tell the president we were winning?" Kennedy asked Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte, appearing before the Senate Committee on Armed Services.

Negroponte, who assumed the position created to oversee the nation's intelligence agencies a year ago, answered that "things are moving in a positive direction in Iraq overall."
