Professor Leuchtenburg discusses the ties that Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Lyndon Johnson had with the South and how they used these ties to pass landmark legislation like the New Deal and the 1964 Civil Rights Act. William E. Leuchtenburg, past president of the American Historical Association, is professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including "The FDR Years: On Roosevelt and His Legacy" and "In the Shadow of FDR: From Harry Truman to Ronald Reagan."
