I remember the postings here at DU.

A DUer with a motorboat (fishing vessel? sorry, I'm not a boater) offered to help with search and rescue, but it was going to cost him something like $250/day to gas the thing up and run it, which money he did not have. All he asked for was gas, but he was turned down.

I've had to correct several typos in this short message, my fingers are shaking slightly with remembered anger. This has to have been one of the worst episodes in American history.
