2. and some might say 'don't say we'
Some of us have worked all our lives to prevent this type of thing from happening. We've worked to encourage more citizen participation in government and for citizens to understand the other branches of government, such as the judiciary. We've done this through grassroots activist groups.

From these experiences, I could cite many stories of how ignorant Americans are about their democracy.

But don't say "we." Some of us don't feel we belong in that category.
