And he's probably got a lot of money to burn compared to any newcomer. Remember that our election system is not completely subsidized. Much of it is run on private cash. As a result, the poor have a disadvantage in running against the rich. It's not impossible to beat somebody like Lieberman, but the reality says it's terribly difficult. It's a shame that ability to raise money is considered as important if not more so than one's message in our system. You'd think one's message should count exclusively.

Economic populism combined with grassroots campaigning are, in my mind, the only way that offers even a chance of overcoming Lieberman's advantages. If Bernie Sanders can do it as an independent, then it can also be done as a Democrat in the primary, but I'd say it's too late to start now at this point in the game. Somebody should've been using this avenue at least a year earlier to build a base of support to at least wage war against Lieberman's seat.
