16. "this bill sets our country on a path to war with Iran"
Mind-boggling, chilling, exasperating, frightening, sickening, outrageous.

There can be no doubt that both republicans and democrats are putting us on this "path." Why they are doing it is beyond me. Is it for political positioning with voters? Is it because they are all corporatists and corporatists need war and oil? Is it because they truly feel Iran is a real threat AND believe that this administration can handle the responsibility of dealing with it? Do they not have concerns that this is a mistake and that they are playing with fire here?

And, I'm sorry, DK's speech was nice, but if 21 of them truly think this is putting us on a path to a disastrous war, then it is their duty to shout it on every talk show, introduce resolutions that require the administration to come back to congress before taking action, stand together in a press conference and talk about how badly mangled the Iraq war has been and that we don't trust these guys to get it right.

I don't like the silence and passivity regarding what could be the mother of all geo-political mistakes. I refer to a pertinent huffington post from a couple of weeks ago by Beinhart:

snip

"If the invasion of Iraq was not a matter of self-defense -- however much the definition was stretched -- and it was not sanctioned as collective action -- it was a war of aggression.

There are no mitigating circumstances, except, perhaps, the silence.

The silence, vast and still, came from the media. It came from our other politicians. From our historians, lawyers and generals, from our priests, ministers, rabbis and imams, who failed to step forward and say, wait, once upon a time we said that waging an aggressive war was the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.

Once upon a time we hung people for the crime of waging an aggressive war.

We are continuing that war. We have already begun the preparations for another war."

snip

More silence. More of the same kind of silence. Where is the opposition? Where is the explanation of votes for the bill by dems? This does not bode well.
