It's even more terrifying. The scariest part is how the citizens of the country in the book (Canada, I think, as Atwood is Canadian, but it's not named) let their rights slip through their fingers a little at a time till there was nothing left.

I hope you're right--that in most places it wouldn't be allowed to get to that point. I just try to keep in mind that Matthew promised that this admin wouldn't succeed with their plan to pen people up in those detention centers. I'd prefer to think that Americans love their freedom too much to be led to the slaughter like that. But then I think of how much freedom we've given up already, and so many people don't even notice...just like in Handmaid's Tale... :scared:
